Racing is a great way to improve your sailing skills, whether a boat owner or crew…

Owners: We welcome sailing boats of any make, model and size.  Our regular Racing fleet is made of a wide variety of boats and crews.  You don’t need a sophisticated racing boat, just the willingness to take part, do your best and learn the rules! 

Crew: The mixed fleet at BMYC means that there are opportunities to get involved in sailing in so many different ways.  Whether you are looking for a regular weekend activity, offshore racing or opportunities to sail abroad there is a boat here that is looking for you.

Boat Owners: We can help in a number of ways

We use a handicapping systems that favours learners and we run race series specifically to help those with limited experience to get involved.

You should check your insurance includes club racing (most boat insurance policies do as standard).

Also check your onboard safety equipment complies with the BMYC Safety Regulations (it probably does).

Interested in Crewing..? We can Help You

If you’re interested in taking part in racing as a member of a boat’s crew you are very welcome to join us…

If you have some experience, just turn up about 90 minutes before racing (check times on the website), ask at the bar for the Race Officer, and almost certainly you will get a sail.   You can also check the BMYC Members Facebook page LINK for boats looking for crews..

…a few pointers…

The best way to try racing whether you are a boat owner or crew, a beginner or have some experience and are looking to improve, is to join our yacht racing appreciation, Club Class.

We race every Sunday morning throughout the year, and one evening each week between April and August. To gain more from your experience:

• Read the Notice of Race (NOR) to confirm when, what time, and where…
• The Sailing Instructions (Sis) provides an overview of our competition rules, they might appear daunting but just ask and we can help.
• As you gain experience you might want to spend a little time brushing up on the Racing Rules of Sailing. The key rules to observe are ‘when boats meet’, these are not very different to the ‘Colregs’ and again just ask…
